Cultivating Dharana: The Power of Single-Pointed Focus in a World of Distractions

Meg Fyfe Watkins | MAR 23, 2024

In a world brimming with distractions and constant noise, the ability to tune into one thing at a time is like a superpower. The key is Dharana (the 6th limb of yoga), which is the practice of cultivating single-pointed focus. Think about it: in the midst of juggling work, relationships, family, finances, household maintenance, and so much more, Dharana gives us an amazing tool to anchor ourselves despite the chaos. Being able to draw on the practice of single-pointed focus as needed is like finding your centre in a storm.

So how can we cultivate this important skill of single-pointed focus?

1. PRACTICE A SEATED DHARANA MEDITATION TO HONE YOUR SKILL OF SINGLE-POINTED FOCUS

The most well-known practice of Dharana involves meditating on the flame of a candle. By focusing solely on the flickering light and gently bringing your attention back whenever it wanders, you can train your mind to stay wherever you have directed your intention. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration as your concentration improves. This practice not only hones your ability to focus but also cultivates mindfulness and inner calm.

2. BUILD BODY AWARENESS AND RELIEVE TENSION

Begin to bring your Dharana practice into functional use by focusing on specific areas of tension in the body. Take your jaw, for example - a common area where people tend to hold stress. You can slowly release this tension through gentle movement (wiggle the jaw, or move the tongue around inside the mouth to soften) or relaxation techniques (encourage the jaw's connection points to soften with every exhale). By consciously directing your attention to the sensations in your jaw and gradually releasing any tension that is present, you not only alleviate physical discomfort but also sharpen your ability to maintain focus amidst discomfort.

3. ENGAGE DHARANA IN YOUR LIFE

The practice of Dharana shouldn't be confined to your yoga mat; it's a skill meant to be integrated into every aspect of life. This Spring, consider choosing one area of your life to apply the ability for single-pointed focus that you've cultivated. Whether it's nurturing a hobby, acquiring a new skill, or letting go of habits that no longer serve you, dedicating time and energy to this one thing can bring about profound transformation. Create a plan, set achievable goals, and prioritize this aspect of your life to experience the power of focused intention.

By training ourselves to focus on one thing at a time, we unlock a myriad of benefits. Clarity emerges as the mind becomes less cluttered with distractions, allowing you to see situations more clearly and make informed decisions. Strength develops as you discipline your "monkey mind", enhancing your ability to persevere in the face of challenges and to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. And perhaps most importantly, presence deepens as you learn to fully engage with the present moment, savouring each experience without being pulled in multiple directions. It's all about empowering yourself to fully engage with whatever life brings, fostering stronger connections, boosting productivity, and finding that inner peace we all crave amidst life's busy-ness.

We'd love to hear how you plan to cultivate your practice and skill of Dharana in the coming months. Will you practice single-pointed focus on your mat? In your body? In your daily habits and actions? Let us know in the comments, and let's support and inspire each other as we harness the power of Dharana to lead more intentional, focused, and fulfilling lives!
